Licensing

The Office of Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer (OIPTT) strives to leverage the commercialization of DU’s innovations by establishing relationships and contractual agreements that benefit the public, support campus research and education, and reward inventors for their ingenuity.

Overview of the Commercialization Licensing Process

It all begins with an idea!

  • Disclosure – Faculty can submit their disclosure to OIPTT through the Unified Request Site (link)
  • Review Process – OIPTT evaluates the invention’s stage of development, potential commercial viability, and all IP considerations.
  • IP Protection – OIPTT works with outside patent counsel specializing in University IP protection. Many of these attorneys have a technical background and can actively work with our inventors alongside OIPTT to seek appropriate IP protection.
  • Market Inventions – OIPTT and inventors work with one another to determine when an invention is ready to be licensed to a startup or existing company.
  • License – OPITT will negotiate a licensing agreement. The length of time for negotiation can be relatively quick, while others take longer depending on the licensing partner.
  • Products & Services – If a license agreement is finalized, OIPTT will provide ongoing support to the researcher to cultivate the relationship with licensees to optimize commercial impact.
  • Royalty Income – OIPTT distributes royalty income to inventors under the terms of the IP Policy Manual.
