Campus Life  •

Dear DU Community,

Happy New Year, and welcome back. As we kick off another exciting quarter, I want to highlight ways you can help keep yourself safe this winter.

  • Be aware of the weather: Check the weather forecast before you leave your residence every day to make sure you have the appropriate clothing with you to protect you from the day’s weather.
  • Be careful on icy surfaces: Although our Facilities Management team does their best to clear roads and sidewalks of ice and snow promptly, our snow removal protocol prioritizes ADA access routes. This snow clearing map provides information on those locations to better assist you as you navigate the campus. Wear appropriate footwear if possible, and travel carefully on surfaces that could be slippery.
  • Allow extra time: In cases of hazardous driving or traveling conditions, we encourage you to be careful and allow for extra time when traveling to and around campus
  • Treat frostbite and injuries immediately: Frostbite can occur quickly in cold temperatures. The Health & Counseling Center (HCC) provides many medical and mental health services, including in-person and virtual, crisis and after-hours support. All University of Denver students have access to free crisis services at the HCC, regardless of insurance coverage. Visit du.edu/hcc  or call 303.871.2205.
  • Watch for notifications from DU regarding weather-related delays: In cases of extreme weather, the University might choose to close the campus or have a delayed opening for the safety of our community. You will receive an email and an alert if you have given us permission to text you in emergency situations. You can also visit our DU Weather page for updated information.

DU Safe App: Your Safety in Your Hands

One of the best tools you can have on hand is the DU Safe App. This app is designed to give you quick access to Campus Safety, emergency alerts, and other vital resources. It also features a friend walk tool, where you can have a friend virtually walk with you to your destination. I strongly recommend downloading the app if you haven’t already.

Chief’s Hours Continue

Due to the popularity of the Chief’s Hours, started last fall, I will be continuing these hours to meet with the community this Winter Quarter as well. From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Thursday in January and February starting January 9, 2025, I encourage you to drop by the Campus Safety Center Room 301 for a chat. This is an opportunity for you to engage directly with me, the Chief of Campus Safety, and have all your questions answered.

Sessions will be held in Campus Safety Center Room 301, located on the third floor of the Evans garage. Come share your thoughts and learn about our campus safety initiatives. Regular engagement sessions and community reports are part of our ongoing efforts to build a safer, more engaged, and resilient campus community.

My team is here to support you, and we are committed to fostering a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Your safety is our top priority, and we are here to help whenever you need us.

For emergencies, please dial 911 and then 303-871-3000 for Campus Safety’s 24/7 dispatch line. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns on the non-emergency line at 303-871-2334 or by using this online form. You can visit our website for more resources.

If you would like an easy, year-round alternative to report problems and get campus safety notifications, you can download the DU Safe app in the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
