Veterans Day Message from the Chancellor

Dear University community members,

The United States honors armed forces service members every Veterans Day on Nov. 11. At DU, we will hold a special flag-lowering ceremony this Tuesday, at 4:45 p.m., at the flagpole on the west side of the Leo Block Alumni Center. The ceremony is open to all DU community members, followed by a reception hosted by Alumni Relations. All are welcome at the reception by registering.

DU Athletics and Recreation is also honoring service members at the Denver Pioneers vs. Air Force Academy hockey game Nov. 21. A special military appreciation ticket offer is being presented by the Colorado National Guard.

More than 200 University of Denver students are veterans or current members of the military, and many veterans are represented among our faculty and staff. We have several veterans' programs on campus, including a Student Veterans of America chapter and a support and information network for veterans among our students and staff.

Veterans Day provides us an opportunity to thank and pay tribute to the military members among our University community. I believe it is also an opportunity for us to reflect on what more we can do to support and include students who bring with them experience as current or former service members.

Studies show that veterans often feel disconnected from student life on college campuses and benefit academically from specialized programs and better understanding of the challenges they face. Addressing this issue is part of our goal to be an equitable, diverse and inclusive community in which everyone feels like they have a home in DU.

I hope you will join me in paying tribute to the hundreds of active-duty and veteran military personnel who are a part of our University community, on this Veterans Day and especially going forward.
