Dear DU community members,

We would like to share the second progress update on the University of Denver’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Action Plan, which was launched in August 2020 after campus-wide consultation and feedback. The DEI action plan is organized around five impact areas.

Importantly, this update details new steps we have taken over the past seven months. We want to recognize that, especially at the unit and college level, individuals and committees have been supporting DEI work for years or even decades previously.

Our action plan was created to address long-asked-for and meaningful changes at DU. In this important work, there is always more to do, but we are proud of how far we have come—most especially during one of the most challenging and fraught years in recent memory.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the entire ODEI team, but especially to Tom Romero, who has so ably served as our interim vice chancellor of diversity, equity and inclusion, and led the creation, vetting and implementation of the DEI Action Plan. Thank you, Tom. We are all deeply indebted to you for your continued commitment to DU and your passion and expertise around DEI. And thank you again to the DU community. Our policies, structures, support and programming determine how welcoming and inclusive we are as a community; but so do our behaviors and decisions as individuals within the community. Thank you, each of you, who in ways large and small, structural and personal make this community more welcoming and supportive to all.

We are proud of DU for taking on this hard and complex work, and look forward to continuing to provide updates on how we are making DU a diverse, inclusive and equitable institution.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Haefner
Chancellor
