Pilot Program Expands Ethics at the Daniels College of Business

The University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business is known for academic rigor and a long commitment to teaching ethical leadership. Thanks to a generous donation from Daniels’ alumni Jack (BSBA 1979) and Sheila Weinberg (BSBA 1979), DU’s School of Accountancy will pursue this rigor and ethical leadership through a partnership with Truth in Accounting, a nonprofit organization focused on financial reporting in government agencies.

“We are delighted to partner with the Daniels College of Business in this way,” says Founder and CEO of Truth in Accounting Sheila Weinberg, CPA. “Truth in Accounting looks forward to working with the School of Accountancy and the University to help further our mission to educate and empower citizens with understandable, reliable and transparent government financial information.”

This program will open up scholarship and research opportunities to faculty and students at the Daniels College of Business. As trained accountants and researchers, they will be able to learn in-depth about the accounting and budget practices of city, state and federal government entities.

Researchers in the School of Accountancy will apply their knowledge of governmental accounting to finding and analyzing data from government financial reports to help create the annual flagship reports of Truth in Accounting: the Financial State of the States and the Financial State of the Cities. The organization was instrumental in bringing better financial disclosure to governments, especially in the area of state and local government pensions and other retirement liabilities.

In addition to being graduates of the Daniels College of Business, Sheila and Jack Weinberg are both active volunteers in the DU community. Sheila has served as a member of the Daniels’ School of Accountancy Advisory Board for over a decade. She founded Truth in Accounting in 2002. Jack can be found in the stands at most DU soccer games, and he continues to serve on a number of nonprofit boards in the health care industry and youth sports.

“We are honored and grateful for the Weinbergs’ continued commitment to Daniels and the University of Denver,” says Sharon Lassar, director of the School of Accountancy. “This partnership will expand our ethical business leadership curriculum to governments, focusing on the fiscal responsibilities of elected and nonelected government officials.”
