Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Evergreen offers mountain town ambience without the lengthy drive. Just 25 miles (40 minutes) from the University of Denver, Evergreen is known for its stunning natural landscapes, art scene and charming shops and restaurants. Get the most out of your trip with our suggested itinerary:
Morning
Start your day by grabbing breakfast at one of downtown Evergreen’s eateries:
- Have a sweet tooth? Head to Alpine Bakery Pastries for your pick of donuts, cookies and more.
- Need caffeine? Check out Muddy Buck Cafe for coffee, tea and savory pastry options.
- Want something more substantial? Fuel up at the Wildflower Cafe.
Get outside before the sun is at its highest! There are many easily accessible outdoor spaces in Evergreen. Choose your spot based on activity— hiking, mountain biking, climbing—or altitude. Remember that Evergreen is at an elevation of 7,220 feet, with many local peaks climbing higher. Know your limits and recreate responsibly.
- Those who are interested in vast, open spaces with the option to hike or bike on forested trails should consider Elk Meadow Park (note that the Stagecoach Trailhead is currently closed.)
- There are a number of trail options for every level at Alderfer/Three Sisters Park. For a hike to a summit with a view, try the 4.4-mile Evergreen Mountain Trail.
Afternoon
Evergreen is home to a thriving arts scene. Check out local artists’ work at these venues:
- The Evergreen Gallery features over 100 artists and doubles as a gift shop. Art includes ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, paintings, photography, prints, stationary and wood.
- The co-op Shadow Mountain Gallery features around 30 artists at any given time. It is cooperatively owned by the artists themselves, who live locally and take turns working shifts.
- Stoneheart Gallery is on the smaller side but heavily features local artists: two from Denver and five from Evergreen.
- White Rabbit Wood Creations offers woodwork, including personalized options.
Satisfy your sweet tooth by stopping at The Colorado Creamery. The flavors are close enough to the classics to appeal to every taste but creative enough to offer something new, and they’re all—you guessed it—extra creamy, just like the name says.
Check out the Hiwan Heritage Park and Museum for a bit of local history. The four-acre property, which includes a 25-room log cabin, was the home of a Civil War widow and her daughter, who later became one Colorado’s first female doctors. Hiwan was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and is now operated by Jefferson County Open Space. There is a picnic area in the park for those wanting to take a quick timeout before adventuring onward.
Enjoy more outdoor time at picturesque Evergreen Lake. In the summer, you can rent paddleboards, kayaks and canoes, or purchase a pass and use your own personal watercraft. In the winter, the lake is open to the public for ice skating and hockey. No matter the season, visitors can enjoy mountain views while walking on the trail around the lake.
Evening
End your day with some food and live music. Evergreen has many restaurants to choose from that offer a mountain town experience. Both venues listed below offer traditional saloon fare, drinks and live music. Note that Little Bear Saloon’s indoor space is less family-friendly. Check out their websites for upcoming music acts to find one that best suits your taste:
If you’re looking for a quieter experience sans live music, consider Revival Brews. They have indoor and patio seating options, food and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
