Campus Safety

Announcement  •

Dear DU community,

As you read in the Chancellor’s email yesterday and in the follow-up email this morning, our community continues to respond to the events that took place on our campus and across the country last spring. And as chief of campus security, my number one priority is the safety and security of every member of our DU community.

We will soon mark the one-year anniversary of the devastating events of Oct. 7, 2023. The events that took place across the country after Oct. 7 often required additional safety and security diligence. Additionally, our country is experiencing a volatile election season, which could disrupt regular activities on campus.

Out of an abundance of caution and to best protect the students, faculty and staff who live, work and study here at DU, we will begin requiring card access on all buildings across campus starting Oct. 4, 2024, at 4 p.m. for at least a week and periodically through the election season. Please make sure you have your DU-issued ID card with you at all times to gain entrance into buildings. Building operating hours will not change.

The Department of Campus Safety will closely monitor our campus and the overall climate in Denver over the next few weeks and will adjust card access as necessary. We advise all community members to always have your ID card with you in order to gain access to buildings, attend programming, and more.

I also encourage you to download the DU Safe app. The DU Safe app is packed with safety resources that will help keep you safe in many real-life situations. The Safety Toolbox shows a notification history of alerts that campus safety has sent out. The app also includes a "Report a Tip" feature that allows you to choose between reporting an emergency or non-emergency, anonymously.

Download DU Safe from the Apple Store or from Google Play.

Thank you in advance for helping keep our community safe this fall.

Sincerely,

Michael Bunker

Chief of Campus Safety
