Railroad Suicide Prevention - Persuade
How to Persuade
- Listen to the problem
- Seek to understand the problem
- Suicide is not the problem, it is a solution to a problem
- Do not judge
- Offer hope
- Normalize feelings
Say:
- "I want you to live."
- "I’m on your side."
- "I’m willing to listen."
- "We can get through this."
- "I can help you get help."
Ask questions:
- "Will you come with me to get help?"
- "Will you let me help you get help?"
- "Will you talk with me about other possible solutions?"
- "Will you promise not to kill yourself until we have exhausted all avenues of help?"
- "Who else might help? Family? Parents? Brothers? Sisters? Clergy?"
