Lewis Dold, the main photographer of the Colorado Coalfield War, was able to equally interact with all sides in the strike showing the daily lives of strikers and troops. His business was to take and sell picture postcards. To insure profits, he had to meet consumer expectations of photographic composition showing people as happy or posing in favorable situations. In photographs such as this one, Dold showed a more everyday and mundane image of the National Guard than other photographers such as Stuart Mace.
