Early Berwind
Colorado Fuel and Iron (CF&I) settled Berwind in 1890. This settlement centered in the south end of Berwind Canyon. Amenities and service were limited until the establishment of the Sociology Department in 1901. In the 1890s, miners built their own houses and developed their own forms of recreation. John Aeillo did provide the camp with a store and other services.
With the establishment of the Sociology Department, the company increasingly supplied services in the camps such as schools, meeting halls, club houses, shows, libraries, and traveling art displays. The addition of these services provided miners and their families with benefits, but increasingly took control over the activities and lives of miners and their families. |
