The north end of the camp acted as the entrance to the camp. To the left across the canyon are the show houses, with the Corwin School and YMCA in the center and the houses of managers and administrators to the right. The placement of these buildings at the entrance gave visitors a clean perception of the camp rather than an industrial one.

Not every area in the north portion of the camp was an elite one as both Hispanic and African-American miners were set apart in different areas of the camp. Across the canyon from the show houses was an area called "Frijole Hill." Most of the Hispanic miners lived in this area of the camp. The majority of the African-American miners lived in the small canyon running by the Corwin School. Although the Rockefeller Plan promoted an image of equality, the spatial reality reflected segregation of both class and race.
