Employment Eligibility - I-9s and Social Security
As mandated by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, the University must verify the employment eligibility of all individuals that the University hires as employees (both temporary and permanent). Employees must properly complete Section I of the Form I-9 online after accepting their position, but no later than their first day of employment. Within three (3) business days of the start of employment, the new employee must appear in person with the acceptable documents so that the Employment Services team within Human Resources can complete Section II of the Form 1-9 and confirm the employee’s eligibility for employment through the E-Verify system. For assistance with questions regarding the Form I-9 process, contact the Office of Human Resources, at 303-871-3502 or by emailing employmentservices@du.edu.
To comply with wage reporting and tax regulations, the University requires that each employee provide a valid Social Security Number (SSN). If an employee does not provide the University with a valid SSN by their first day of employment, the employee must provide the University, no later than 30 days from their first date of employment, with documentation from the Social Security Administration (SSA) that the employee has applied for a SNN. If the employee does not provide, within 30 days from their first date of employment, documentation from the SSA that the employee has applied for a SSN, the University will terminate the employee, and the University will not re-hire the employee without the employee providing a valid SSN to the University.
After an employee has provided documentation within 30 days of their first date of employment that they applied for a SSN, the employee must provide the University with a valid SSN within 90 days of their first date of employment. If the employee does not provide the University with a valid SSN within 90 days, the University will terminate the employee, and the University will not re-hire the employee without the employee providing a valid SSN to the University.
