The evacuees formed their own police department. The force was headed by three internal security officers who were members of the WRA staff. The majority of the force was comprised of thirty to sixty evacuee men. The efficiency of the police department is attested by the fact that less than one dozen evacuees released from Amache prior to the camp's closure were involved in an incident which resulted in a police record.
The Amache police department was organized in the following manner:
1 Evacuee Chief of Police
3 Captains
2 Desk Sergeants
2 Field Sergeants
3 Detectives
17 or more Patrolmen who were assigned in beats of 8 hour shifts
The function of the military police at Amache was to patrol the warehouses at night and guard the main gate.
