Biography
Since 2005, Dr. Susan de Ghize has spoken in six international conferences and published two papers, “Yin and Yang à la Schoenberg: Balance in the Creative Process of Rhythmically Developing Variations” and “The Positives and Negatives of Hauptmann's Theory of Meter: A Look at Mozart's Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 332”. Her recent papers have included a comparison of ancient philosophy to the music of Brahms, Goethe's Farbenlehre in relation to Moritz Hauptmann's Die Natur der Harmonik und der Metrik , and traditional forms in Leos Janácek's Second String Quartet. From 2004-2006, Dr. de Ghize was theory coordinator at Northeastern University in Boston, where she implemented a new Musicianship series as well as a course titled Advanced Studies in Music Analysis. Prior to Northeastern University , she was one of the founding faculty members of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University . While in Singapore , she was also a pre-concert lecturer for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Dr. de Ghize received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2003, where she was the valedictory speaker at the Graduate Division Commencement with over 700 graduates from all disciplines. At U.C. Santa Barbara, she worked closely with Lee Rothfarb, Pieter van den Toorn, and Michael Beckerman. Her dissertation is titled “Rhythmically Developing Variations in the Motivic Process of Brahms's Chamber Works.” Dr. de Ghize received her B.A. in Music from the University of California at Berkeley in 1996, where she studied piano with Janet Guggenheim and received the prestigious Eisner Prize for Creative Arts in Piano Performance. Besides music, Dr. de Ghize enjoys traveling, watching sports, drinking Peets Coffee, and playing beach volleyball with her husband.
