The Championship Tradition
The Pioneers won their 19th NCAA National Championship in March 2008. The team has won more championships than any other Division I ski team in the nation.
Over the decades, our student-athletes have filled the trophy cases. And our fans have been there to support them. Whether on the ice, court or field—and even in the pool—Pioneer teams always give the fans something to cheer about.
Hockey
With seven national championships to its credit, the Pioneer hockey team routinely skates circles around the competition.
Always eager to repeat success, the Pioneers won back-to-back championships three times: in 1960-'61, 1968-'69 and 2004-'05. The team won its first championship in 1958 under legendary coach Murray Armstrong.
DU Pioneer Adam Cole
Jessica Lopez's 2007 season helped DU finish 10th at the NCAA National Championships, where she tied for first on the balance beam and scored top-five finishes in two other events in her session. She was also named a three-time All-American—a first in DU gymnastics history.
Skiing
The Pioneer ski team is no stranger to national championships. Since the ski program's inception, the team has captured 19 NCAA national championships—more than any other program in the country. DU skiers have also won 68 individual national championships.
Gymnastics
In 1982, the Pioneer women's gymnastics team won a Division II national championship—the first national championship for a women's sport in school history. Gymnast Karen Beer also won the individual all-around championship in the same season.

DU has 17 NCAA Division 1 sports teams.
