ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Undergraduate
The Judaic Studies minor, or the Judaic Studies concentration as part of several majors, contributes to students’ liberal education. Many of the Judaic studies courses may be used to meet the elective
requirements of various degree programs. Because the Judaic Studies program combines courses from several disciplines and departments, a concentration in Judaic Studies is useful for students majoring in or intending to pursue graduate studies in related disciplines, such as History, Literature, Philosophy, Religion, and Sociology.
Students who wish to specialize in Judaic Studies may choose from the following programs:
- BA minor in Judaic Studies
- Religious Studies major with concentration in Judaism
- English major with concentration in Judaic studies
- History major with concentration in Judaic studies
- Philosophy major with concentration in Judaic studies
Requirements for Minor
The Center for Judaic Studies has redesigned its minor by shifting from a chronological approach to a thematic and cultural approach. In addition to proficiency in Hebrew language equivalent to one year [JUST/HEBR 1001, 1002, 1003] , students are required to take four courses in a broad array of disciplines from history, literature and philosophy, to religious studies and sociology. Students will also be required to take the annual Colloquium in Judaic Studies, a two-unit course in which faculty and students present material from their areas of research around the annual theme in Jewish culture each year. Finally, the Judaic Studies minor has created First-Year Foundations and Second-Year Core courses to introduce a wide variety of students to the study of Jewish culture and society. Please see the Judaic Studies course listings for a full list of Judaic Studies courses across the university.
