All DU students are welcome to enroll in studio art and art history classes for which they have the pre-requisites. Some seats in some classes are reserved for majors and minors in order to ensure that they can complete their degree requirements, but there are always seats. Non-majors who use the waitlists during registration will find it easier to enroll as they gain seniority. Anyone who is unable to gain entry to a particular studio art class for 2 consecutive quarters should contact the art office for help (303-871-2846 or saah-interest@du.edu). eMAD classes are rarely available because all seats are usually required for DMS, eMAD and art majors and minors, but one class was designed specifically for non-eMAD majors- ARTD 2000 Interdisciplinary approaches to electronic media - and students without previous computer art experience are welcome.
This course satisfies part of the Arts and Humanities foundation requirement. It introduces students to issues involved in the creation and interpretation of works of art. Through slide lectures and discussion, students examine works of art from different time periods and cultures. Students study materials and techniques used by artists, and acquire skills and vocabulary necessary for visual analysis. They also understand art as personal expression and as a response to social, economic, religious and political forces. As students develop an awareness of the ways in which art reflects and influences its audiences, they become more confident critics of the visual arts.
This course satisfies the Creative Expression requirement at DU. This is a hands-on workshop course for students with little or no previous art experience. Students discuss and look at examples of a wide variety of basic sketching methods and techniques. Students maintain a visual record in a notebook format of ideas and experiences related to daily life. The instructor guides and assists students in the development of fundamental drawing skills.
Students, staff, faculty and members of the metro Denver community are invited to draw from the human figure on Saturdays during the academic year, from 10am to 1pm, in SAB room 221. No instruction or critique is offered. Participants pay $6 per session, or purchase a 5 session ticket from the monitor for $20. For more information, contact Prof. Deborah Howard (303-871-3260) or the monitor.
DU does not have an official audit option. Anyone wishing to audit a class should contact the professor well in advance to learn whether auditors are allowed and under what conditions of participation. Audits are only possible when space is available. Auditors are encouraged to join DU ART!
