A qualifying examination is used by the art history faculty to determine a student's strengths and weaknesses and to help with program planning. It must be taken before the first week of classes.
The student must demonstrate reading ability in a second language at the level of the 4th semester or 6th quarter of college study. An exam may be taken in the Department of Languages and Literatures or proof of a grade of B+ or better in the final quarter or semester of language may be submitted. French or German are recommended for students considering further study for the Ph. D. All students must provide a written plan to the Graduate Advisorfor completion of this requirementat the beginning of their MA program.
Upon completion of qualifying exam and language, the student should contact the office to ensure that advancement to candidacy forms have been completed.
Upon completion of course work the student takes on an exam written by the faculty specifically for that individual. It combines course work in broad essay questions.
An expanded, publishable paper is the final requirement. Download Guidelines--PDF
