University of Denver Art Collections

The DU Art Collection includes more than 2,000 artworks drawn primarily from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Highlights from the printmaking collection include original lithographs by 19th century French satirist Honore Daumier, several List Art posters from the 1960s, including an image by Andy Warhol (right), and a collection of brilliant silkscreen prints by 20th century artist Yaacov Agam.

Paintings and drawings include work from several prominent Colorado artists, including DU alumni and past DU faculty.  Several pieces in the collection by past DU faculty were featured in the 8 Painters and Sculptures at the University of Denver, 1930-1965 exhibition at the Myhren gallery in the Spring of 2007,

We are continually pursuing opportunities to show artworks from our collections.

Several works are on display at DU's School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM); additionally, we are pursuing other opportunities to show artworks from the collection. For example,an exhibition of donated works by retired chair of SAAH Mel Strawn was displayed at the Denver Central Library in their 2007 exhibition Mel Strawn: All Together Now, 1940s-2000s

Other projects include the planned installation of works by alumna Marion Buchan and by one-time adjunct professor Arnold Ronnebeck at DU's Newman Center for the Performing Arts. As of October 2007, the works are on display in the lobby of the SAAH Shwayder Arts Building (see Gallery News page).

At the Newman Center, one of DU's highest-profile facilities, we have already facilitated the installation of a mixed-media work by SAAH alumna the late Lee Milmon, generously donated to the University by her family. These projects exemplify our commitment to preserve and promote the legacy of distinguished faculty and select alumni of our programs. For assisting us towards this goal, we also acknowledge the gift, on the occasion of her retirement from the SAAH faculty, of a vibrant large-scale drawing and a delicate collograph print by professor of printmaking Bethany Kriegsman.

Gallery Support

The Gallery will benefit from a number of extremely generous contributions this year, including a gift of multiple artworks from Riverhouse Editions, and financial support from the Rose Community Foundation and Rose Youth Foundation (for the Frédéric Brenner projects). Kent and Vicki Logan continue to support both graduate and undergraduate education through their loans to our student-organized exhibitions. The exhibition and conservation of the Fridlyand archive is supported by donations from Russ and Cathy Dalbey/The Dalbey Educational Institute. http://www.dalbeyeducation.com/. In addition, the University has provided substantial funds from the Marsico Initiative (for the Marsico Curatorial Practicum), and from the Divisions of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (Frédéric Brenner, exhibition planning, collections support, Gallery improvements).

Collections-related projects are partly supported by the Victoria H. Myhren Endowment, established in 2000 at the University of Denver to support the Gallery. Additional contributions are of course greatly appreciated. We anticipate adding further opportunities for contributed support by friends of the Gallery in the near future.
